Forget traumatic Toddler Haircuts

Some children find haircuts intolerable which is often nothing more than reaction to a stranger with shiny scissors coming close to their head, after all as adults we teach children to be mindful of strangers and that scissors cut.  For some children the trip to the Hairdressing salon is what's frightening.   Entering a strange odd smelling environment, told not to touch anything, being watched by other staff and clients, climbing into a large chair, getting wrapped up in a funny cape, told to sit still and having their hair sprayed wet can be very unnerving.  By following some easy steps you can make the trip to the hairdresser a more pleasurable experience.

* You would be right in thinking that restraining your child makes things worse,  you can't teach a child not to be afraid by frightening them more.   * Choose a family friendly salon, ask other parents where they go, it may be comforting to your child knowing their friends go to the same Hairdresser.  * Don't call it a haircut, to some children the word cut means pain, refer to it as a trim.  *  Having a friend or sibling nearby will help put the child at ease or act as a distraction.  * Make an appointment at a happy time, if your child is tired or hungry,  topped with a fear of haircut makes for a terrible experience.  *  Drop into the Salon to simply say hello, this allows the child to get familiar with staff and the environment without fear.

Find a good experienced hairdresser that will be quick and confident, we often find it a little bit more fun for the child to put one of their favourite shows on our ipad this keeps them entertained and makes the visit something to look forward to.

Beat bad Winter hair this year

The envioronment can have some of the most damaging effects on hair in both Summer and Winter.  Even though in Brisbane we generally experience a moderate winter, winter is often worse.  As we don't take precautions and protect the hair leaving us susceptible to static split ends and dehydrated frizz.  Indoor heating, sun, gusty winter winds combined with heat styling leaves hair looking dull and feeling dry.  What it lacks in body it will make up for with static electricity.  Don't wait until winter is upon us talk to your stylist now.

On the top of our list of tips to avoid bad hair days this winter, a deep conditioning hair treatment you can leave on for up to 20 minutes once a week (options exist for those who are time poor).  If your hair is fine or oily apply beginning 1 inch away from the scalp and pull it through to the ends and then rinse extra thoroughly.  Your Stylist can happily advise what best suits your hair and a alternative that will fit your lifestyle and budget.
A deep conditioning treatment should be complimented with a leave in conditioner of some form, again for fine limp hair light conditioning sprays are available.
When choosing styling products this Winter, avoid anything with a high alcohol content, it can be further drying to the hair.
Be blowdryer mindful, with the colder weather we are using the blowdryer more and  sometimes only because it's warm and cosy.  If you find yourself using the blowdryer more often assess what you are using in your hair for heat protection and if unsure talk to your stylist.
Lastly, when you finish your current Shampoo & Conditioner, talk to your Stylist before you re-buy, they can advise if your hair needs more nourishment.

In closing, remember if you get your hair winter ready from now, you will enjoy more good hair days  than bad this Winter.

Hair help challenge

I was recently asked if I like what I do?  Interesting question, I didn't have to think about my response, I love what I do now more than ever.  Later that night I found myself thinking about the days conversation, I have been hairdressing for 41 years and in that time I have learned a lot. I know hair, I know what I can do with it and I know it's limits.  I have seen trends come and go and come back again however I am always learning. I love that I can train young hairdressers and give them experience beyond their years.  Most of all I love sharing tips and tricks with my clients on how to easily manage their hair.  Which by chance was the brainstorm to my newest challenge, that is to bring my tips to the digital age. So with the help of my amazing team, we have set about creating this blog where we will post "how to's" tricks and tips.  Stay tuned, We would gratefully accept topic suggestions.
